EU must stand firm on Hungarian attacks on democracy

Today, April 12th 2017, the Commission is discussing the recent developments in Hungary. A new law effectively targeting foreign universities would put a ban on activities of the Central European University.

–We urge the Commission to remain firm on Hungary and the appalling attacks on democracy, most recently in higher education and civil society, says Martin Jefflén, President of Eurocadres, in a comment on the issue.

Both Commissioners Jourová and Moedas have already made strong statements on the issue and Euractiv reports that Commission President Juncker at a press conference last week said that he does “not like the decision” to force through the law.

Eurocadres members are frequent users of higher education and academic freedom is therefore a fundamental value of Eurocadres. In the Future of Europe process Eurocadres has commented that the EU must stand strong on its fundamental values.
